Hon’ble Prime Minister Dr. Lotay Tshering inaugurated the newly constructed and the first ever Pedestrian Terminal in Phuentsholing on 19th September 2022 in preparation for the reopening of the border gates on Friday, the 23rd September 2022.
The new facility is put in place to document and regulate entry and exit of all Bhutanese and foreigners alike. Unlike in the past, people entering Bhutan by the terminal will now have to complete the immigration formalities. Bhutanese citizens have to produce their citizenship identity cards at the main entry while Indian visitors have to produce their voter card or passport. International tourists will have to produce passports for entry. There is a separate immigration sector for tourists with information and currency exchange services.
Following the inauguration, around 80 officials and representatives from across the border visited the Pedestrian Terminal on 20th September 2022 upon the invitation of the Bhutanese authorities. They were invited on familiarization tour of the terminal prior to the opening of the international border gates.
The terminal was constructed at the cost of Nu. 183 million with international standard modern amenities like in the airport terminal. Similar facilities will also be constructed in other main border gates later.
